Outcry Arcade vs QuantGuide: Quant Interview Practice

QuantGuide’s public site offers quant interview questions, hints and worked solutions. Outcry adds a place to practise calculations and decisions under a clock. Use the two formats to test different parts of your preparation rather than treating a remembered answer as proof of understanding.

Worked example: probability and optimal stopping

Consider a fair six-sided die game. You may bank your current sum s or roll again. A 1 ends the game at zero; faces 2 to 6 add their values. What stopping threshold maximises expected banked points?

One more roll followed by banking has value (5s + 20)/6. Compared with banking s now, its gain is (20 − s)/6.

Banking is optimal at s ≥ 20; at exactly 20, rolling once and then banking on survival has equal value. Below 20, that one-roll strategy already beats stopping. Above the boundary, every surviving roll moves farther into the stopping region, which justifies the threshold rather than merely guessing it.

A practice sequence

  • Read a worked solution, close it, then derive the decision condition yourself.
  • Change the die, bust outcomes or costs and rebuild the expectation.
  • Use a stopping exercise to compare your decisions with the payoff model supplied in that game.

Compare progress using fresh work

After working the probability and optimal stopping example, change one condition and explain why your method still applies or needs to change. A correct answer is more useful when you can identify the model, justify the calculation and state its limits.

Outcry’s exercises supply their own game rules. Its mocks show counts, clocks, navigation and marking, with a source check identifying published employer details and practice adaptations. Check your invitation for the process you will actually sit.

Frequently asked questions

How should I combine QuantGuide and Outcry?

Use a study resource to learn or review a method, then solve a changed example and explain your reasoning. The probability and optimal stopping exercise above gives a concrete starting point; no single resource or practice score guarantees a hiring outcome.

Are the example and timings an employer’s actual test?

No. This is original educational material with explicitly stated assumptions. Outcry mock settings are practice choices unless its source check identifies a published format element.

Where can I check pricing and access?

Use each provider’s current official pages. Outcry’s Pricing page lists its current plans and included features; this guide does not assert a universal competitor price or that every exercise is free.
