Outcry Arcade vs Wall Street Oasis: Quant Prep

Wall Street Oasis’s public site covers finance careers, training and community resources. For quantitative practice, distinguish career research from working a probability model yourself. Outcry’s drills provide another place to calculate and test decisions; no placement or hiring guarantee is implied.

Worked example: bet sizing and log growth

A repeatable independent bet wins three times the stake with probability 0.4 and loses the stake with probability 0.6. What bankroll fraction maximises expected log growth? Evaluate a fraction of 0.45.

For 0 ≤ f < 1, g(f) = 0.4 ln(1 + 3f) + 0.6 ln(1 − f). Setting the derivative to zero gives 1.2/(1 + 3f) = 0.6/(1 − f), hence f = 0.2. Concavity makes this the maximum.

At f = 0.45, g(f) = 0.4 ln(2.35) + 0.6 ln(0.55) ≈ −0.0169 per bet. This model has negative long-run log growth despite positive arithmetic expected profit. The often-used “twice Kelly” rule is an approximation, not the exact zero-growth boundary for every payoff.

A practice sequence

  • State independence and bankroll assumptions.
  • Compare arithmetic expectation with expected log growth.
  • Treat optimal fractions as model outputs, not personal investment advice.

Compare progress using fresh work

After working the bet sizing and log growth example, change one condition and explain why your method still applies or needs to change. A correct answer is more useful when you can identify the model, justify the calculation and state its limits.

Outcry’s exercises supply their own game rules. Its mocks show counts, clocks, navigation and marking, with a source check identifying published employer details and practice adaptations. Check your invitation for the process you will actually sit.

Frequently asked questions

How should I combine Wall Street Oasis and Outcry?

Use a study resource to learn or review a method, then solve a changed example and explain your reasoning. The bet sizing and log growth exercise above gives a concrete starting point; no single resource or practice score guarantees a hiring outcome.

Are the example and timings an employer’s actual test?

No. This is original educational material with explicitly stated assumptions. Outcry mock settings are practice choices unless its source check identifies a published format element.

Where can I check pricing and access?

Use each provider’s current official pages. Outcry’s Pricing page lists its current plans and included features; this guide does not assert a universal competitor price or that every exercise is free.
