Outcry Arcade vs Mental Math Apps: Timed Decisions

Arithmetic speed and question selection are different skills. A timed mock adds a budget: time spent on one item cannot be spent on another. Analyse a skip decision using the rules actually stated for the exercise; employer marking and cutoffs must come from the invitation.

Worked example: time allocation under scoring rules

In a hypothetical +1/−1/0 exercise, easy items take 5 seconds at 96% accuracy. A hard item takes 16 seconds at 75% accuracy, while skipping takes 1 second. Using a steady-rate approximation with enough easy items left, compare the hard item with skipping.

An easy item earns expected 0.96 − 0.04 = 0.92 points, or 0.184 per second. The hard item earns expected 0.75 − 0.25 = 0.5 points.

Relative to a one-second skip, working spends 15 extra seconds. At the baseline rate those seconds are worth 2.76 points. The hard item’s approximate net advantage is 0.5 − 2.76 = −2.26 points. This is a time-allocation model, not an exact result for a finite test with different item availability.

A practice sequence

  • Separate answer accuracy from net points.
  • Include skip costs if the particular mock charges them.
  • Re-evaluate when few questions remain or the baseline rate no longer applies.

Compare progress using fresh work

After working the time allocation under scoring rules example, change one condition and explain why your method still applies or needs to change. A correct answer is more useful when you can identify the model, justify the calculation and state its limits.

Outcry’s exercises supply their own game rules. Its mocks show counts, clocks, navigation and marking, with a source check identifying published employer details and practice adaptations. Check your invitation for the process you will actually sit.

Frequently asked questions

How should I combine Mental math apps and Outcry?

Use a study resource to learn or review a method, then solve a changed example and explain your reasoning. The time allocation under scoring rules exercise above gives a concrete starting point; no single resource or practice score guarantees a hiring outcome.

Are the example and timings an employer’s actual test?

No. This is original educational material with explicitly stated assumptions. Outcry mock settings are practice choices unless its source check identifies a published format element.

Where can I check pricing and access?

Use each provider’s current official pages. Outcry’s Pricing page lists its current plans and included features; this guide does not assert a universal competitor price or that every exercise is free.
