Options Simulators and Natenberg: Practice Guide
Options texts can develop a pricing and hedging framework. An exercise can then test whether you apply position units, signs and approximation assumptions correctly. Keep a local Taylor approximation distinct from a full realised hedging result.
Worked example: gamma and theta
An initially delta-neutral position has total gamma +800 shares per dollar and theta −$1,600 per day. Approximate one day’s P&L after a $3 stock move, holding Greeks fixed and ignoring costs, volatility changes and higher-order terms.
The second-order estimate is ½Γ(ΔS)² + ΘΔt. Here that is 0.5×800×9 − 1,600 = $2,000.
The gamma contribution is $3,600 and theta contributes −$1,600. The gamma and theta are already position totals, so multiplying by the contract count again would double-count exposure. Actual hedge P&L can differ when the approximation assumptions fail.
A practice sequence
- Identify whether a Greek is per option, per contract or for the whole position.
- Include the time unit on theta.
- Explain omitted risks and costs before using a simplified answer.
Compare progress using fresh work
After working the gamma and theta example, change one condition and explain why your method still applies or needs to change. A correct answer is more useful when you can identify the model, justify the calculation and state its limits.
Outcry’s exercises supply their own game rules. Its mocks show counts, clocks, navigation and marking, with a source check identifying published employer details and practice adaptations. Check your invitation for the process you will actually sit.
Practise gamma and theta
Use the worked method, then attempt the linked exercise. Check access requirements and the exercise’s stated rules before starting.
Frequently asked questions
How should I combine Natenberg and options texts and Outcry?
Use a study resource to learn or review a method, then solve a changed example and explain your reasoning. The gamma and theta exercise above gives a concrete starting point; no single resource or practice score guarantees a hiring outcome.
Are the example and timings an employer’s actual test?
No. This is original educational material with explicitly stated assumptions. Outcry mock settings are practice choices unless its source check identifies a published format element.
Where can I check pricing and access?
Use each provider’s current official pages. Outcry’s Pricing page lists its current plans and included features; this guide does not assert a universal competitor price or that every exercise is free.
